If you leave DFRDB and are not entitled to retirement or invalidity pay, you may be entitled to elect what is called ‘preservation of rights’. Preservation ensures your accumulated superannuation rights are maintained if you change employment.
Once you do reach retirement age (or earlier in the case of invalidity or death), your final DFRDB benefit can relate to your total employment.
Preservation provisions enable you to either:
- transfer your DFRDB superannuation entitlements to another eligible superannuation scheme by means of a transfer value, or
- retain your DFRDB entitlements in the scheme to receive a deferred benefit once you meet certain conditions.
